The glassy-winged sharpshooter is a half-inch long leafhopper that carries the bacterium causing Pierce's Disease, which kills a plant by choking off its ability to consume water and nutrients. Research shows that the glassy-winged sharpshooter may prefer grapes above all other plants, which presents a serious threat to California's multi-billion dollar wine, table grape, and raisin industry, in addition to a long list of other plants and crops that act as "host" for the bug.
